YUKU SAVI
Yuku Savi is an agave spirits project from Puebla with a history of more than 90 years of traditional family production.
We are a leader in the transition of the agave spirits industry towards environmental sustainability and fair trade practices.
We finance ecological restoration projects in the Mixteca region of Puebla and Oaxaca with proceeds from our spirits.
The Essence
Legend tells us that the hills are alive, and their spirit is called Yuku Savi, a force that can take the form of wind, stones, animals, and even people.
In their sacred caves, we offer mezcal, tobacco, seeds, and fire, praying for the well-being of our Mixtec people— for rain, for health, and for the vitality that sustains us all.
Like that spirit of the hills, this bottle holds the essence of a living plant, the agave. It carries the soul of our Mixtec homeland—its energy, aromas, flavors, and the years of care that reflect the community’s dedication to our plants, the hard work of our people, and the love that we pour into this drink. It is a gift we share proudly, to warm the hearts of those near and far.
Yuku Savi invites you on a journey to the Mixtec lands of Puebla, a place where nature’s challenges are met with resilience, and where mysticism and strength are woven into the land itself.
Yuku Savi is an offering to the earth, and to the life that thrives upon it.
The Origin
The Mixtec region of Puebla lies in southeastern Mexico, a place that preserves remnants of Mesoamerica and honors the memory of our ancestors. The cultural and biological richness of this geographic area is of great significance to mother Earth.
The first humans arrived here 14,000 years ago and domesticated plants that are now staples of the Mexican diet. Foods such as chili peppers, corn, squash, amaranth, and avocado originated here and spread across the Americas.
The diversity of agave in the Mixtec region is the most extensive in the world, with over 70 species present, approximately 20 of which are currently used to produce mezcal.
Further, the region’s diverse bat population has contributed to the creation of unique columnar cactus forests, some of which are over a thousand years old.
These forests, in turn, provide local farming communities with a remarkable variety of food and resources essential to their daily lives.
Agave Atemporal
Agave Atemporal is an ecological restoration initiative spearheaded and funded by Yuku Savi. It is a platform to collaborate with agroecological farmers, researchers, and civil society, and to demonstrate our commitment to regenerative agriculture and eco-friendly agave cultivation.
The project's mission is to reshape agave farming for distilled spirits in Mexico by streamlining environmentally sustainable practices.
Our sustainability initiatives include:
Cultivating both agave and native tree species;
Designing agroforestry systems that integrate food production;
Implementing nature-based solutions to restore degraded forests;
Uniting rural communities reliant on agave with food producers;
Innovating with sustainable forest-based produce;
Financing and supporting nurseries for agave and native plants;
2023 Impact: A Commitment to Restoration
5 additional families became part of our community project.
31% of net profits from mezcal sales were dedicated to our ecological restoration project.
2 new forest nurseries were built to expand our work.
50,000 plants are now being propagated as part of our sustainability initiative.
9,500 plants were strategically planted along contour lines, enhancing soil conservation and ecosystem restoration.
