Berta Vásquez in CA and Yuku Savi Now in the US

October 3, 2024

I had just moved to Los Angeles from New York City, just before creating BHI in 2017. I was engaged to my now wife Rivfka who is from Portland, Oregon, and we knew that one day we’d end up there. After seven years in LA, we finally moved to Portland this summer with two kiddos and our pandemic pup. And we couldn’t be happier!

While visiting PDX, I’ve been lucky enough to meet new friends who gave me the confidence to keep building, so we officially opened BHI’s second office here in July. Earlier this year, we released an exquisite batch of Agua del Sol Tepextate from Conchita Hernández, available at República and Bar Comala here in Portland. We also got to host the Güero team in Santiago Matatlán as they selected a batch of espadín from ADS for their summer patio pop-up. It felt like Paradise!

In September, we had the privilege of hosting renowned Maestra Mezcalera Berta Vásquez in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. She received special recognition by the Mexican Consulate at Mezcal Por Siempre and met many of her biggest fans. Just a few hours of sleep later, we hopped on a flight for a 12-hour visit to the Bay Area where we had breakfast at the Oakland Grill, took in the views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and hosted a special tasting by the lovely team of Odín. She even got local news coverage, watch here! Get the latest release by Mtra. Berta, a wonderfully aromatic Madrecuishe distilled to perfection at 47% here.

FINALLY, Yuku Savi is an agave spirits project from Puebla with a history of more than 90 years of traditional family production. Having spent most of my childhood summers in Puebla and more as an adult, this partnership has been in the works since I started BHI. If you think Yuku Savi is just another mezcal brand, I hope that you look closer. The producer-family-owned label is setting a new standard for the agave spirits industry when it comes to environmental sustainability and fair trade practices. Stay tuned for more!
