Agua del Sol x Eric Mancha: “Mujer del Istmo”
When the world shifted in 2020, LA-based artist Eric Mancha traveled to Oaxaca, drawn to its rich indigenous culture. There, he discovered mezcal and the people who carry its traditions. “You gotta respect the mezcal,” he recalls.
Inspired by his time in Oaxaca, Mancha created “Mujer del Istmo” (“Woman from the Isthmus”), honoring the Zapotec women of Tehuantepec: vibrant, strong, and central to community life.
Back in Los Angeles, Eric connected with Agua del Sol, a small label sharing his respect for tradition, culture, and creation. During his visit to the palenque, he spent time with maestros Francisco and Raúl García, learning about agave cultivation, harvesting, and mezcal production. Photographs from the visit capture Eric in the fields and palenque, immersed in the craft and community that shape every batch. He even shared his painting on a bottle of their mezcal, a symbolic meeting of art and spirit.
Crafted en la frontera of culture and spirit.
This small-batch release honors the strength, beauty, and complexity of Oaxacan and Chicano identity, stories rooted in tradition yet shaped by migration, resistance, and survival.
